The new route is yet to be approved by civil aviation authorities, but ticket sales are planned to go ahead this month.

The service is to be run in co-operation with Alaskan Airlines, which is based in Seattle.

From 4 October Air Tahiti Nui plans to fly twice a week, which will increase its total of weekly flights to North America to 15.

The French Polynesian carrier flies to Los Angeles and from there to Paris.

The US is the main market for the tourism industry.

Air Tahiti Nui plans to resume passenger flights to New Zealand in a month following a two-year suspension because of the pandemic.

There is no date of when its flights to Asia will recommence.
