795 of them were recorded since the borders reopened in July and international tourism resumed.

Most cases are in urban areas of Tahiti, but there are also some in Moorea and Hao.

The government said nine people were in hospital, including three in intensive care.

A majority of the cases registered during the current second wave were considered recovered.

The first outbreak between March and June, which affected 62 people, was brought under control with a lockdown and border closures.

Meanwhile, all strike threats have been withdrawn after teachers' unions negotiated a settlement with the government.

Earlier this week, trade unions abandoned their planned general strike which they called over the response to the pandemic.

The government agreed to pay salaries for workers forced to isolate after employers said they could not bear the cost.

It has been adamant that it will not reintroduce a two-week quarantine for arriving travellers.
