French Polynesia education centres close after worker contracts Covid-19

Two adult education centres in French Polynesia have been closed after an employee tested positive for Covid-19.

Their closure for a week was announced by the government which reported that the current outbreak has now reached 170 cases.

Three people are in hospital, including one in intensive care.

The Health Minister Jacques Raynal said there have been no confirmed cases in Hiva Oa in the Marquesas.

Tourism operators in the area told local media that they want anyone arriving on the island to have cleared a Covid-19 test in Tahiti first.

In view of the worsening pandemic the US authorities issued an alert about French Polynesia, saying non-essential travel there should be avoided.

In the first wave from March to June French Polynesia registered 62 cases.
