Dry conditions prompt fireworks ban in New Caledonia

Continued dry conditions in New Caledonia have prompted authorities to ban the use of fireworks.

The government said the ban applied to areas deemed to be at extreme risk of fire, which cover most of the main island.

Separately, several towns have also issued such bans and the town of Dumbea has cancelled the Christmas fireworks display.

Due to the restrictions, several outlets are reported to have withdrawn fireworks from sale.

In the past two months, there have been more than 600 fires which have destroyed about 370 square kilometres of vegetation.
