Tonga's government has been urged to abolish the death penalty.

No-one has been executed in the Kingdom since 1982, and a de facto moratorium has been maintained since then.

But it still remains an option for convictions of murder and treason.

At an event in Nuku'alofa this week, high commissioners of New Zealand and Australia as well as several NGO representatives urged abolition.
