A summit on empowering women in Tokelau has kicked off on Atafu.

The Ulu o Tokelau, Kelihiano Kalolo, officially launched the inaugural Fatupaepape Summit.

Topics being discussed include improving the welfare of women in Tokelau, and fostering their leadership potential.

The summit also aims to grow awareness of women's rights and their access to services.

Achieving gender equality and empowerment of all females is one of Tokelau's national strategic goals.

The Ulu said the strength of Tokelau is determined by the strength of its women.

In her speech at the opening ceremony, First Lady Atene Kalolo underlined the need for women to participate in leadership roles.

"Leadership today, whether in politics, public service, companies, the Fatupaepae show they are needed for Tokelau to get there," she said.
