Sogavare to maintain Taiwan relations

3:15 pm on 1 May 2019

The Solomon Islands Prime Minister says the country's recognition of Taiwan will remain for now.

However, Manasseh Sogavare added that the country's foreign policy was not hard and fixed.

Taiwan's diplomatic allies have dwindled in recent years, in the face of China's growing power.

China is Solomon Islands' biggest trading partner, despite the lack of diplomatic recognition.

Mr Sogavare said any change would have to consider the benefits to Solomon Islands.
