The United Nations is calling on France and the US to close the military bases they operate in their Pacific territories.

The call is in a draft resolution which the UN General Assembly adopted by 124 votes to eight.
The text calls on the administering powers of the non-self-governing territories on the UN decolonisation list to terminate military activities and eliminate military bases under their administration.
France has bases in New Caledonia and French Polynesia while the US has three bases in Guam.
The UN said the eradication of colonialism had been one of its priorities and continued to be one of its priorities for this decade.
It regrets that measures to eliminate colonialism by 2010 had not been successful, it said.
The UN also expressed regret that France kept failing to respond to requests to submit information on French Polynesia since its reinscription on the list in 2013.
