This comes after a prominent Fijian journalist, who wishes to remain anonymous, was threatened over the weekend after expressing her views on religous diversity in Fiji.

The Pacific Freedom Forum said women all over the region were experiencing online abuse for speaking their minds.

Coordinator Lisa Williams-Lahari said it was not only the responsibility of authorities to crackdown on individuals and groups who prey on women.

"[The journalist] said on one level it was about the violence and the language used against her. But what was also shocking was the lack of support from people who were on the thread that she was on.

"That in many ways can feel quite lonely for women activists when you know they are being bullied they are being flogged in public so to speak and no one is stepping into the fray."
