Last year's growth came off the back of 28.2 percent growth in 2016.

Local Gross Domestic Product is now at $US1.32 billion - the highest ever for the territory, driven mainly by the tourism and gambling sectors.

The real GDP for the United States - excluding the territories - only increased by 2.2 percent.

The Northern Marianas Governor Ralph Torres said the economy's phenomenal growth was nothing short of remarkable.
