The local broadcaster reports that Filipo Katoa called a meeting to announce his move, citing health reasons.

Reports say his Lalo tribe asked him to stay on but he felt he lacked the energy to continue as king.

Filipo Katoa had been enthroned as the Tu'iagaifo, or king, two years ago.

Reports say the next king will be chosen by the Talise clan.

Futuna has two kingdoms recognised by the French republic.

On neighbouring Wallis, there is one traditional kingdom.
