Taiwanese media reported Vice President Chen Chien-jen met with Tuvalu's Finance Minister Maatia Toafa this week, who was travelling with three other ministers.

Mr Chen said Taiwan's relations with Tuvalu, one of its six diplomatic allies in the Pacific, will help Taiwan take part in more global gatherings.

Tuvalu recently supported Taiwan's bid for membership in the World Health Organisation's (WHO) assembly.

In May, Taiwan said the WHO had caved to Chinese political pressure after it was excluded from the annual meeting.

This week's visit comes after El Salvador ended its ties with Taiwan earlier this month in favour of China.
