Taiwan students embark on Indo-Pacific exchange

12:34 pm on 28 August 2018

A group of 75 students from Taiwan are this week being dispersed to six countries in the Indo-Pacific region as part of an exchange programme.

Taiwan News reported the youth ambassadors will visit diplomatic allies including Palau, Solomon Islands and Tuvalu.

The students will spend 10 days in one of the countries, as well as travelling to either the Philippines, Thailand or India.

They will take part in seminars, visit institutes and undertake volunteer work.

The visit comes just a week after El Salvador cut diplomatic ties with Taiwan, marking the fifth diplomatic exit in favour of China since President Tsai Ing-wen took office in 2016.

In a statement, Ms Tsai called on her remaining allies, which include six Pacific states, to cherish their relationship with Taiwan.
