UNICEF and the Pacific Community have teamed up to improve the collection of statistics on children, women and disabled people in the region.

The agencies said there's a lack of data to measure progress against the Sustainable Development Goals set by the UN and they've announced a new partnership to boost collection and analysis.

A World Bank rating system shows Pacific island countries significantly below the average for the Asia-Pacific region in statistical capacity.

The 2017 World Bank Statistical Capacity Indicator reports the Pacific needs to improve on health and poverty surveys as well as vital registration systems.

The agencies said their partnership aims to improve the quality of data collection, the analysis and sharing of figures as well as promote their use in policy-making.
