Mr Pato said there are people who want to derail the trust and confidence that exists between the two neighbours.

But he said Indonesia was instrumental in PNG getting the hosting rights for the APEC summit and gaining special observer status at ASEAN.

The Post Courier reported Mr Pato saying such opportunities and challenges only arise between close friends.

He said PNG believes through economic development, close co-operation and friendship, through respectful discussion and dialogue the living conditions of the people on both sides of the border will be advanced.
