American Samoa's Power Authority is embarking on a major alternative energy project which its acting executive director, Wallon Young, says will save the ASPA about $US6 million annually.

Mr Young said the solar energy project in Tutuila, with additional battery storage, was similar to other schemes in Ofu, Olosega and Ta'u in the Manu'a group.
"This project will bring significant savings to ASPA and its customers," he said.
"The project will generate 30 million kilowatt hours per year, save about two million gallons of diesel per year.
"In today's price it's about US$6 million," Mr Young said.
ASPA will also install a two megawatt photovoltaic project at the hospital.
