About 6000 teachers are still waiting to be paid because they haven't complete administrative tasks, according to the Papua New Guinea Teaching Service Commission chairman Baran Sori.

He told The National newspaper that in April, 10,000 of the 57,000 teachers around the country were cut from the payroll for various reasons.

Mr Sori said it was mostly to do with their failure to submit their resumption of duty summary sheets or not complying with commission directives.

But he said now the number had decreased to around 6,000.

He said some teachers may have either resigned, retired or had not resumed duties.
