Samoa's School of Nursing is about to launch a post graduate programme to address the shortage of qualified lecturers in nursing.

The project between the National University of Samoa and Victoria University of Wellington aims to allow students to keep working in their own communities, support their families and contribute to the development of nursing.

Victoria's Associate Professor, Luamanuvao Winnie Laban, said the aim was to help enhance the resilience of Samoan people through best practice and primary health care.

She said it was essential research is undertaken by Samoans in Samoa on Samoan issues.

Luamanuvao said the postgraduate qualifications would ensure nurses and midwives have better access to study which would allow them to research issues relevant to their own people.
