A magnitude 5.0 quake that struck Hawaii's Big Island has prompted fears a volcanic eruption is imminent.

The quake followed ongoing seismic activity on the island including hundreds of smaller quakes recorded last week.

The US Geological Survey ugraded the quake from an initial 4.7-magnitude.

It struck at a depth of 6.9 kilometers and was centered to the south of Kilauea volcano.

Residents from Puna to Hilo felt the tremor, but no tsunami warnings have been issued.

The ongoing shakes have left residents on edge and many fear an eruption soon after plumes of pink smoke were seen rising up from the crater.

But the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory said the plumes were caused by rocks falling into the crater.

Other experts said the quakes were being caused by a river of magma flowing to the east.

Locals have been advised to prepare in case they need to evacuate.
