A Red Cross worker in Fiji's west says a new cyclone forecast to hit this weekend is the last thing the flood-soaked region needs.

A tropical depression is gathering strength as it heads towards Fiji, and meteorologists said it will probably be a cyclone by the time it hits on Sunday or early Monday.

It is forecast to pass close to Fiji's west and southern islands, which had been hit by Cyclone Josie little more than a week ago, that killed six people and causing widespread flooding.

The western division co-ordinator for the Red Cross Mathew Bolaitamana said river levels are still high and people are still in need of food, water and shelter after last week.

"The last thing we really need right now is the arrival of another tropical cyclone," he said.

"We still have around 40 evacuation centres open and these evacuation centres have a total of 2,313, I think, people still in these evacuation centres."

Mathew Bolaitamana said relief efforts are likely to be stood down until the latest storm passes.
