Unions launched a general strike two days ago in an effort to stop the government's plan to hike the retirement age from 60 to 62.

The government wants the assembly to adopt the reform during this afternoon's sitting of the assembly.

The unions have said they will block road access to Papeete from both the east and west in a last ditch bid to stall the reform.

The government said it had no option but to change pension eligibility criteria to secure the system's survival.
