The cyclone has caused nearly $US7 million worth of damage to American Samoa's government buildings and other infrastructure.

The governor's request was signed and transmitted on February 25.

American Samoa is currently under a presidential Emergency declaration which allows for limited direct federal assistance to the territory.

The local government has asked the public to be patient as it awaits a response from the federal government.
