The Fiji Trades Union Congress's permit to have a march in Suva tomorrow has been rejected by police.

General Secretary Felix Anthony said they received the letter from police on Thursday saying the permit had been rejected because Mr Anthony was being investigated.

Mr Anthony had been arrested and questioned by police ten days after a march in support of suspended Air Terminal Service workers which took place last month.

Mr Anthony said the police suggested his remarks about the possibility of a national strike would sabotage the economy.

However, today the Director of Public Prosecutions decided no charges would be laid.

Mr Anthony said the reason for declining the permit was a lame excuse, particularly as the application had been given in December last year so there was plenty of time to decide on the matter.

He said the rejection is a denial of the people's fundamental right, constitutional right to assemble, to protest and to freedom of speech.

The FBC news reports police have said the reasons for the denial have been communicated to the applicant and no other comment will be made.
