Global industry representatives have been called to the summit on Tuesday to discuss ways to meet climate goals set in Paris two years ago and the declaration will call on the shipping industry to comply.

Dr Heine said the Marshall Islands was among countries pushing for shipping to take control of its emissions.

"We're very pleased that France's government has put together this declaration and of course, you know, in honouring our leader Mr Tony de Brum is very important to us, so we're very, very thankful that this is coming forth," said Dr Heine.
