Chief Fire Officer Qio Moceitai says the fire broke out at 1.22 in the morning and was attended immediately by fire trucks from Lautoka, Nadi and Ba.

He said the operating theatre at the hospital was fully ablaze and patients were evacuated by firemen, police, army personnel from Lautoka and hospital staff.

He said there were no injuries from the fire.

The cause has not yet been determined and investigators are likely to take a few days to find out what started the blaze.

"It's quite a big area that caught fire and we have to do our investigation thoroughly, probably two to three days."

Meanwhile Fiji opposition leader Ro Teimumu Kepa said the Minister for Health must set up an inquiry team to carry out investigations into the incident.

Hospital authorities said out-patients clinics and x-ray services would be temporarily closed till further notice and the public are asked to use their nearest health centres.
