A proposal has been made for the three French territories in the Pacific to modernise their relationship and hold a summit to that end.

The idea follows a meeting in Papeete between French Polynesia's president Edouard Fritch and the president of the territorial assembly of Wallis and Futuna David Verge.

Mr Verge has thanked Mr Fritch for French Polynesia's support for the bid of Wallis and Futuna to become an associate member of the Pacific Islands Forum.

He also expressed appreciation for backing Wallis and Futuna to join the Polynesian Leaders Group.

The two leaders also discussed the need for the French Pacific territories to adopt a common stance in dealing with France and Europe.

French Polynesia and New Caledonia became full Forum members this year.
