Seventeen Police and Maritime officers in Samoa have graduated from a United States Coast Guard course on how to board and search vessels out at sea.

The US Embassy said the knowledge acquired would help improve fishing control and control suspected criminal activity.
It said the training was a perfect complement to the shiprider programme, in which Samoan officials could hitch a ride on US Navy ships in the area to patrol their waters.
