The Northern Marianas is to receive about $US4.5 million dollars in federal funds to purchase 12 generators to provide emergency back-up power to 91 wells and ensure water supply to all villages on Saipan after a storm.

The funding is part of continuing Typhoon Soudelor recovery efforts provided by the federal government.

The CNMI's US Congress delegate, Gregorio Kilili Sablan, said the funding will help ensure the Commonwealth Utilities Corporation can maintain water delivery even after a major storm.

Under the funding deal, two existing buildings will be strengthened to house some of the new generators and their electrical switchgear.

The rest of the generators will be protected within seven new concrete structures.
