Call to respect Fiji journalists after third attack

8:26 pm on 17 March 2017

The Fiji Media Asssociation is calling on members of the public to respect the work of journalists in the country.

This comes after the latest attack on a journalist in the country - the third in the past two months.

Filming a man sentenced on a corruption case earlier this week, Fiji Broadcasting Corporation journalist Praneeta Prakash was struck in the stomach with a stone thrown by a remand prisoner.

The prisoner was under police escort at the time.

Police refused to take action even as the prisoner swore and verbally abused Ms Prakash.

The Fiji Media Association's general secretary Stanley Simpson said the police must do more to protect journalists and to take threats and attacks against them seriously.

" I mean they are an integral part in seeing that justice is served to ensure that a fair trial is taking place, that both sides are being heard and that the public is seeing that the wheels of justice are turning," he said. "So it is very important that the public appreciate the role that they play and the challenges they face."

Stanley Simpson said the police had said they were taking the matter involving Ms Prakash seriously and will be looking into it.
