Temporary gun amnesty in PNG

2:39 pm on 20 December 2016

Papua New Guinea's prime minister has announced a temporary amnesty for the surrender of unlicensed firearms.

Peter O'Neill said the amnesty will run until the 28th of February, and will allow the surrender of unlicensed firearms to local police.

He said there has been an influx of firearms into the country in recent years which has contributed to law and order problems.

Mr O'Neill said removing unlicensed firearms is an important part of preparations for next year's elections, and the government will take further measures to reduce the risk.
