New Caledonia unrest spawns plan for new road

5:56 pm on 18 November 2016

Plans are being drawn up in New Caledonia to build a new road south of Noumea because of repeated clashes along the existing road near St Louis.

The Mont-Dore council is reportedly exploring ways to finance a second route.

Commuters have been travelling in fear because stones were thrown at cars and guns were fired.

There has been no arrest over the clashes during which five policemen suffered gun shot injuries and dozens of stolen vehicles were set alight to block the road.

One political party has called for the military to secure the area.
