The Cook Islands Government says it is now considering a reticulated, or networked, sewerage system for Rarotonga.
This follows calls for such a process from the Chamber of Commerce which has dismissed the current use of septic systems as no longer appropriate.
The government is still working to get an expensive new reticulated water supply in place and Finance Minister, Mark Brown, said a reticulated sewerage system would be a major financial commitment for the country.
Mr Brown said the government was putting a hold on the current project, and would look into a reticulated system.
"The talks, and discussions and proposals for reticulation have overtaken the existing project to the extent that we are now putting a hold on the current project with upgrading septic systems, and looking at how we can possibly fast track the reticulation that is required if we are going to go down the road of reticulation. I guess you could say we are in the midst of discussions in that particular regard."
