Two electoral officials in Papua New Guinea have been referred for police investigation over alleged malpractice in the Kandep electorate in the 2012 general election.

The Post Courier reported that the returning officer for Kandep, Naepet Keae, along with the election manager for Enga Province, Henry Kyakas, had been referred to police for investigation.
Electoral Commissioner Patilias Gamato requested police to lay appropriate charges against the two officials and said the failure to count five ballot boxes was highly questionable.
The referral stemmed from concerns raised by the National Court this week when it set aside the Kandep election win of Don Polye and ordered a recount of votes for the seat.
Mr Polye had since stepped down as leader of the opposition.
