CNMI moves to restrict gun ownership

The Northern Marianas government has made moves to restrict gun ownership in the territory.

This follows the U.S. District Court for the CNMI ruling the ban on handguns was unconstitutional.

Our correspondent reported a 57-page draft law to regulate the possession of firearms would be considered in a House of Representatives emergency session today.

The governor's spokesman, Ivan Blanco, said the Torres administration was working with the Office of the Attorney General and the Legislature to enact the necessary laws to ensure gun safety measures were in place.

These would include background checks, waiting periods and other safety regulations, for all prospective gun owners.

The CNMI Attorney General was not expected to appeal against the District Court ruling.
