Papua New Guinea police have officially opened their 18th unit to combat family and sexual violence.
Deputy commissioner, Jim Andrews, said the new facility at Kerema, the capital of Gulf Province, is a positive step forward.
He said the scheme, which began in Port Moresby more than five years ago, is at the forefront of changing attitudes and mindsets, especially among Papua New Guinean men.

Mr Andrews said in traditional PNG society, the wife and children were seen as "properties" with which men could do as they please.
He said even if police are a bit lacking or slow in their response to family and sexual violence, the new building and the other 17 around the country are a constant reminder of the need for change.
