The United Nations is running a human rights training workshop for Fiji police this week.

Fiji Village reports the UN's Human Rights Officer, Johan Olhagen, who is visiting from Geneva, told the workshop that torture is never justified in policing and is inactive in finding out the truth.

He said police that interview techniques and forensics are more useful to finding out the truth.

A police spokesperson, Ana Naisoro, says those attending are being trained on a wide variety of issues.

"Some of the topics include human rights and the use of force when it comes to law enforcement and investigations, human rights in situations of arrest and even down to the human rights aspects of interviewing process."
