He says the UN Convention Against Torture or UNCAT has asked him to share his views on human rights and the anti-brutality measures he's implemented since starting as commissioner a year and a half ago.

"There's a label against our Fiji police since fairly early that they are fairly brutal, but since my appointment here one and half years ago we are working strongly on that. The request by the UNCAT was to give an overview in terms of our experiences in terms of steps to be taken to prevent police brutality."

Ben Groenewald says he's waiting for approval from his political bosses to attend the Costa Rica meeting.

He also says Fiji is expected to formally sign up to UNCAT in the next few weeks.
