A court in French Polynesia says it will give its verdict in a major tax fraud case involving the finance company Sofipac on January 15.

The company has been found to have assisted in handling about 300 fake claims to get French tax rebates worth about 35 million US dollars.

A dozen people have been implicated in the affair but the main suspect, William Bernier, was not in court today.

He is in a psychiatric clinic after he attempted suicide.

The prosecution wants him to be jailed for seven years and fined 900,000 US dollars.
