The Guardian Australia says the department transferred the Australian-born infant to Nauru despite widespread concerns about the adequacy of conditions at the centre.

The oppoistion Greens senator Sarah Hanson-Young says she has written to the immigration minister, Peter Dutton, asking him to act immediately to remove the baby from Nauru.

Australia's policy towards asylum seekers has been widely condemned.

This comes as the Greens leader Richard Di Natale has demanded an apology from Mr Dutton, after it was confirmed that Senator Hanson-Young had been spied on during a trip to Nauru.

Although Mr Dutton was aware of the illicit activity he described the Senator as an embarrassment to Australia.
