Momis holds commanding lead in Bougainville polls

The incumbent president of Bougainville, John Momis, holds the lead in the race for the presidency of the autonomous Papua New Guinea region.

Counting is still underway in the polls for a new 40-seat House of Representatives.

According to the latest provisional results published this morning Mr Momis had received 56 percent of total valid votes.

Sam Akoitai is in second place with 12 percent.

The election authorities have declared five MPs elected to the House.

They are the member for Torokina constituency Steven Suako, Kokoda constituency member Rodney Osioco, Kongara member Dominic Itta, the member for Taonita Tinputz David Braun Vatavi and Tsitalato constituency member, Fidelis Semoso.
