The Papua New Guinea Hunters rugby league team survived a second-half scare to edge the Mackay Cutters 26-24 in Kokopo and snap a two-game losing streak in the Queensland Cup.

Captain Israel Eliab led from the front with two tries, with Thompson Teteh, Wartovo Puara and Kato Ottio also dotting down.

The Hunters led 20-6 at half-time and extended their lead to 20 points shortly after the break before conceding three unanswered tries to leave the home crowd sweating in the final minutes.

The PNG team are level with Burleigh and Tweed Heads on eight points, but remain outside the top six on points differential.
