Rise in women contesting elections in Bougainville

10:06 am on 8 April 2015

There has been an increase in the number of women contesting constituency seats in elections in Bougainville.

Elections take place next month in the autonomous Papua New Guinea region.

The Post Courier reports in the past two elections women were mainly interested in the three regional seats reserved for them in the Bougainville House of Representatives and at the most seven women contested the open constituencies.

Nominations which closed last week show eight women are vying for election in North Bougainville, and three are contesting the seats in the south.

The paper reports recent training sessions for potential women candidates are likely to be behind the rise.
