PNG police announce first female chief superintendent

12:09 pm on 18 April 2014

Papua New Guinea's Commissioner of Police Toami Kulunga has announced the promotion of the first female police officer to the rank of chief superintendent.

The officer, Joanne Clarkson, is currently the acting Assistant Commissioner Reforms.

She was among 70 policewomen who have been promoted by the 2013 Police Promotion Board.

Commissioner Kulunga says this is a milestone for the police force and speaks volumes for the Equal Employment Opportunity policy as well as the current modernisation programme the constabulary have embarked on.

He says Chief Superintendent Clarkson has demonstrated that women can advance their career within the force if they are committed and work hard enough.
