New cruise package to Fiji's remote Lau group

A new cruise package has been launched in Fiji with a visit to the remote Lau group of islands.

Captain Cook Cruises says it has responded to requests for something different after many years of cruises in the Yasawa islands, Taveuni, Labasa and Savusavu.

The Australian Managing Director, Jackie Charlton, says the new itinerary is an 11-day package and the first to navigate the full length of the Lau group.

She was on the inaugural cruise and says tourists and crew brought clothes, gifts and water supplies for some that had not had rain in weeks.

"Diving operators do visit the Lau, individual yachties visit the Lau and there are certainly plenty of those out of New Zealand but as far as commercial shipping, very little. We certainly didn't see any while we were cruising, the access is pretty difficult. So yeah, we're certainly pioneers in this area."

Jackie Charlton says the next Captain Cook Cruise to Lau will be in April and another is planned for late 2014.
