Concern over Vanuatu cruise ship arrival commotion

2:50 pm on 29 October 2013

The Vanuatu business community is to meet the government this Friday to try to deal with the sometimes intimidating confrontations seen when cruise ships dock in Port Vila.

There are reports that tourists have been terrified by the antics of taxi and bus drivers touting for business.

The cruise ship arrivals are an increasingly important part of the tourism sector and the business community has written to the prime minister calling for action.

A chamber of commerce tourism sector spokesperson, Brian Death, says there needs to be more police involvement because the situation on the wharf is often chaotic.

"It just becomes a bit intimidating for people coming off the wharf who may not have been here before and say, hang on, I 'm not too happy with this. We are aware of people who have got to the gate and said, this is too hard - we won't go and confront that situation."
