Sport: Pacific Mini Games open in Wallis and Futuna

8:47 am on 3 September 2013

Competition begins at the Pacific Mini Games in Wallis and Futuna on Tuesday after the event was officially opened on Monday night

Close to three thousand people packed into the Kafika Stadium in the capital Mata-Utu to watch the opening ceremony.

Vinnie Wylie was one of them.

"The twenty competing teams were led out onto the main stadium by the previous host of the Mini Games, the Cook Islands, with the hosts, Wallis and Futuna, entering last to loud cheers. The ninth edition of the Mini Games, and the first to be held in Wallis and Futuna, were declared officially open by the French Overseas Minister, Victorin Lurel, before the arrival of the flame, with Mini Games Ambassador and World Paralympic Javelin champion, Tony Falelavaki, given the honour of lighting the torch. The crowd was then entertained by a show depicting the history of Wallis and Futuna, from the first settlement by the Austronesians up until the present day."

But the real entertainment begins today, with athletics, volleyball, weightlifting, sailing and va'a all in action.
