Overhaul of PNG's education system planned

7:12 pm on 13 August 2013

PNG's Department of Education says it is planning a complete overhaul of the country's education system.

The acting secretary of education, Michael Tapo, says a government taskforce made 60 recommendations to the department of how the Outcomes-Based education system, introduced in 2010, could be improved.

Dr Tapo says the department will look to change teacher to student ratios, teaching training and the curriculum to focus more on English and Mathematics.

He says it will retain an outcomes-based education system, but also integrate other teaching models.

"It may mean we have to pay attention to the number of minutes and hours we have to teach lessons, it may mean the resources we have to do it, it may mean the government has to put more into education, or teachers that are produced for institution have longer time of professional education. There's a whole host of things that we have to pay attention to when it comes to quality."
