CNMI college opposes merger idea

The Northern Marianas College president Sharon Hart is opposed to the education commissioner's proposal to restructure the existing educational system in the Commonwealth.

The CNMI Public School System handles the preschool to 12th grade educational programme, while the post secondary programme is administered by the Northern Marianas College.

Earlier this week the education commissioner Rita Sablan said a single structure from pre-school through to the 16th grade would be more efficient and make for a seamless transition to college.

Sharon Hart says the State Higher Education Executive Officers earlier conducted a major study on student success under a single structure system and said it found that each of the individual elements of the educational system must be excellent in its own right.

She says no state in the U.S. has a fully developed, well-integrated educational system extending from birth through postsecondary education.
