Polynesian countries to form new group

4:13 am on 12 September 2011

Leaders from a number of Polynesian countries will meet in November to form a grouping similar to the Melanesian Spearhead Group.

Samoa's Prime Minister says he first suggested the idea a number of years ago, and has held informal talks with Polynesian leaders.

Tuilaepa Sailele Malielegaoi says officials are working towards the idea now, with Pacific Islands Forum countries to meet later in the year.

"And then after that, an enlarged gathering will be called, which would be inclusive of our members who are observers at the Forum, to be brought in. Like American Samoa, Tokelau, Tahiti Nui."

Tuilaepa Sailele Malielegaoi says it is important to have a grouping which concentrates on matters of particular interest to Polynesian states.
