Tonga keen to modernise business registry

Tonga's CEO for Ministry of Labour, Commerce and Industries wants to modernise its business registry by going online, but is still sorting out problems.

Tatafu Moeaki says the ministry wants to maintain the integrity of the information yet make it easier for businesses, both local and international, to get access to information.

But he says they are still working out a suitable system to handle payments.

"We have some issues in Tonga, like credit facilities online. Unlike New Zealand they have all their credit cards and stuff, most businesses in Tonga, they don't have those facilities yet, so we have to make provisions for other forms of payment, not online."

Tatafu Moeaki says improving their registering system will make it more appealing for outside investors, but they also want domestic businesses to benefit as well.

He was in Auckland attending a Pacific Registries workshop put on by the Asian Development Bank and the New Zealand Companies Office.
